A larger-than-life white-tailed deer without antlers stood on the grass facing the newest section of the Chicago Riverwalk on Tuesday as pedestrians walked past.
It’s a 12-foot-tall, 20-foot-long painted fiberglass sculpture titled “Deer,” which was created in 2015 by Tony Tasset, the artist who brought the giant eyeball to the Loop’s Pritzker Park in 2010. “Deer” was recently on display at an art fair in Miami Beach, Fla., before being installed on the Riverwalk between Franklin and Lake streets Monday night, according to the city.
The arrival of “Deer,” which will remain on display through October, is part of a citywide initiative to install artwork in neighborhoods throughout the city, and one of a number of projects on display near the Riverwalk. Mayor Rahm Emanuel designated 2017 the Year of Public Art.
The work is on loan from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Arkansas, the city said.
The Riverwalk recently has become a backdrop for other artwork.
The words “Real Fake,” spelled out in gold letters by Scott Reeder, was installed Monday at the northeast corner of Upper Wacker Drive and Wabash Avenue near Trump Tower and the Riverwalk. It will be on display through October.
