Mickalene Thomas in Picasso Celebration: The Collection In A New Light : Musée Picasso Paris, Paris, France
April 8, 2023 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso and thus places the year under the sign of the celebration of his work and his international artistic heritage in France and Spain.
On the occasion of this anniversary year, the Musée national Picasso-Paris invites the British designer Sir Paul Smith, known for his work on color, tailor-made and kitsch, to sign the artistic direction of an exceptional hanging, showcasing the museum's collection.
This hanging, designed with the complicity of Sir Paul Smith, unfolds around the masterpieces of the collection. The unique approach that the designer brings to the works invites the public to consider them through a more contemporary reading, and underlines the always current character of Picasso's work. Also, the worlds of the two creators sometimes meet, as if around a shared love for objects, for costumes or playfulness, offering reconciliations and a resolutely inventive and spectacular layout of works!
The route is punctuated with works by international contemporary artists. Thus, Guillermo Kuitca, Obi Okigbo, Mickalene Thomas and Chéri Samba participate in this same desire to open up new perspectives on the posterity of Picasso's work, by questioning his image or by taking up some of his plastic innovations.
