This sculpture by Kennedy Yanko blends found metal with a “paint skin” made of urethane and enamel paint. Yanko scavenges metal from junkyards, selecting pieces that contain some remnant of the character of their former existence. She makes her paint skins as organic complements to the industrial rigidity of the metal forms. Yanko deploys her materials in ways that explore the limitations of optic vision, underlining the opportunities we miss when looking with eyes alone. Her methods reflect a dual abstract expressionist-surrealist approach that centers the seen and unseen factors that affect, contribute to, and moderate human experience.
