For his 2012 solo debut with Kavi Gupta, Scott Reeder created a series of sculptures that included metal representations of crumpled paper. These so-called "paper studies" appeared in various forms in the exhibition. Some were presented as sculptural forms on the floor. Or in the case of Untitled (Mobile) (2012), they were incorporated as aesthetic counterbalances on a Calder-esque, Post-Modern mobile. As in Reeder's paintings, these sculptural works explore ideas of both the presence and absence of the artist’s hand, emphasizing how Reeder values the role of mark making and expression in art while making a good-natured joke of the weight often given to seminal Conceptual Art.
