Kavi Gupta presents a solo retrospective of paintings by Sherman Beck, original member of the historic Black Arts collective AFRICOBRA. Following inclusions of Beck’s work in pivotal group exhibitions such as I Am Somebody at the Peninsula Hotel, Chicago, AFRICOBRA 50 at Kavi Gupta, and AFRICOBRA: Messages to the People at the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, Sherman Beck at Kavi Gupta offers a comprehensive introduction to Beck’s practice.
Building on a central tenet of AFRICOBRA’s philosophy, Beck’s aesthetic vision is rooted in positive portrayals of Black family. Reveling in the mystery and mysticism of everyday life, Beck extends the definition of family through space and time, including humanity’s kinship with nature and the metaphysical world.

Seated Royalty, 2020-21In this memorial portrait, Beck depicted U.S. President Barack Obama and his wife, former first lady Michelle Obama, as Fourth Dynasty Egyptian prince Rahotep and his wife Nofret. Obama is notably pictured with the gray hair he had when leaving the office after eight years, while the Obama’s two daughters are pictured in the background as roughly the age they were when Obama first took office. Says Beck, “Prince Rahotep was a government official, and his wife Nofret also had some power. I thought this would be a different and unique way of portraying Obama. Everybody does portraits of the sitting president. I wanted to present him in a princely way. I chose to present the daughters in a kind of meek way. I didn’t want to leave them out, but I didn’t want them to be a big part of the statement either. They’re roughly the age they were when their dad took the presidency.”

Family Gathering, 2022This painting portrays a multi-generational family gathered around the trunk of a baobab tree. The people range in age from elders to infants, and are dressed in contemporary clothing. Within the trunk of the tree, spectral embodiments of the family’s ancestors can be seen. The word baobab originates from medieval Latin, and means “father of many seeds.” Many contemporary people translate the word as “the tree of life.” For Beck, this family portrait is meant to imply more than many generations of a single family. It is also meant to suggest people’s kinship with the ecosystem. The baobab tree, if properly cared for and conserved, can share a bountiful symbiotic relationship with humans, providing dozens of life sustaining and economically valuable resources. Says Beck, “I try to suggest more than the instant, more than a snapshot in a painting.”

Journey, 2019Set in a dense, verdant forest, this painting shows a group of shadowy, naked figures on the left side of the canvas peering into a fiery, glowing break in the foliage. A jagged, cliff-top pathway leads from the opening to a distant horizon, over which the sun is rising. On the right side of the canvas, another opening in the foliage shows the return of the path. In this opening, the sun is setting. In the canopy of the forest swirls a star-filled cosmos inhabited by a single, ethereal being seemingly made of light. This painting belongs to a series of works in which Beck explores the theme of pathways and journeys. "It's a circular thing," says Beck. "It's all metaphorically a statement about life."
