JEFFREY GIBSON SELECTED FOR 2019 WHITNEY BIENNIAL

January 26, 2019

Kavi Gupta congratulates Jeffrey Gibson on his inclusion in the seventy-ninth Whitney Biennial. The Whitney Museum of American Art announced the seventy-five artists who have been selected to present work in the biennial, which is considered the country’s most important showcase of contemporary art; this edition will be curated by Jane Panetta and Rujeko Hockley and will run from May 17-September 22. Gibson will present his inaugural solo exhibition with the gallery this September at our Elizabeth St. location.

Panetta about this year’s biennial says, “Ru and I especially focused on emerging artists and first-time biennial participants: approximately seventy-five percent of the artists in the show are under forty and only five have previously appeared in a Whitney Biennial. In part, this emphasis resulted from what we saw during our research across the US, as we were struck by the profound difficulties of our current moment and the ways in which so many artists we encountered are struggling and facing fewer opportunities to present their work publicly.”

Gibson, (b. 1972, Colorado, US) combines Native American traditions with the visual languages of Modernism to explore the contemporary confluence of personal identity, culture, history, and international social narratives. Gibson’s work has been exhibited extensively around the world. Recent solo exhibitions include Jeffrey Gibson: Like a Hammer, at the Denver Art Museum, Love Song, at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and Said the Pigeon to the Squirrel, at the National Academy Museum, New York. His work is included in multiple important collections, including that of the Smithsonian Institution, National Museum of the American Indian, the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Eiteljorg Museum, and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art.
