Dallas Fêtes Sixth Art Fair with “Eye Ball”

Artists, gallerists, collectors and other industry insiders descended on Dallas for the sixth Dallas Art Fair, which wrapped at the Fashion Industry Gallery Sunday. On Saturday night, revelers gathered in front of Tony Tasset’s 30-foot tall “Eye Ball” — a realistic three-dimensional re-creation of the artist’s own eyeball. The sculpture, which was completed in August of last year, sits near the center of an 11,000 squarefoot space across the street from Main Street’s Joule Hotel, offering one of the most unique photo ops in town. New York-based artist Andrew Kuo played DJ for the night and live graffiti paintings by the Sour Grapes Collective added to the entertainment. Among those in attendance: artist Richard Phillips, whose first U.S. solo museum exhibition — “Negation of the Universe” — opened Friday at Dallas Contemporary; Dallas collectors Derek and Christen Wilson; fair co-founders John Sughrue and Chris Byrne; art advisor and collector John Runyon; artist Jonah Freeman; and Anna-Sophia van Zweden, Director of Festival Advancement at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, who — earlier in the week — unveiled plans for another large-scale arts festival, set to debut in May 2015.
