They look happy, but Beverly Fishman's vivid polychrome reliefs are actually derived from the shapes of prescription pills. "I'm struck by the current opioid crisis," she says. "We should be aware of the seductive nature of the pharmaceutical industry." Fishman started the series six years ago with depictions of single pills. The 10 appearing in "Chemical Sublime," at Kavi Gupta gallery in Chicago, February 24 to April 28, however, are larger and more complex. The urethane-and-wood configurations combine the broken forms of up to four pills, with names such as Untitled (Anxiety, Three Missing Doses).
