Artist Spotlight: Jamaal Peterman

Booooooom, June 29, 2020

Recent paintings exploring the ontology of African Americans living in urban environments by Brooklyn-based artist Jamaal Peterman. Breaking down layers of code and conduct, Peterman synthesizes colour, symbols, geometry, and space to create visual metaphors for the separation of class within these communities — distinctions reinforced by commodities, wealth and the inequality of resources given to lower-income families. Peterman also uses modernist lines of connection to draw on socio-political structures and conduits of information, passages through which a multitude of dialogues and human interactions take place.
