Overview
Miya Ando: Mono no aware , Saint Laurent Rive Droite
“Mono no aware” is a Japanese aesthetic and philosophical concept that recognizes the beauty in particularly transitory things; often illustrated with natural phenomena.
Curated by Anthony Vaccarello, Miya Ando’s solo exhibition at Saint Laurent Rive Droite, Los Angeles investigates this idea in her new installation of sculptures, painting and silkscreens. On view is a recreation of the karesansui (dry Zen garden) of Ryōanji Temple in Kyoto. Ando’s version of this historically significant garden consists of 15 shou sugi ban (charred wood) cubes, coated with silver nitrate. Also on view is a monumental cloud painting from her ‘Kumo’ (Clouds) series and a set of silkscreen prints executed with micronized pure silver on paper derived from photographs taken of our galaxy.

SAINT LAURENT RIVE DROITE

MIYA ANDO

MONO NO AWARE

EXHIBITION

SAINT LAURENT RIVE DROITE Los Angeles presents Mono no aware, an exhibition by Miya Ando, a Japanese and American artist based in New York, featuring a selection of her paintings, wood sculptures, and silkscreen prints curated by Anthony Vaccarello from April 8th to May 13th, 2025.

Miya Ando's art explores the dialectic coexistence of Eastern and Western cultures through natural phenomena. She uses various materials, such as steel, wood, glass, and washi paper, to depict the cycles of life and the passage of time. Her works incorporate chemical transformations, often with fire and silver nitrate, creating objects and installations that reflect the ephemeral nature of seasons, the moon, clouds, and stars. Ando often works with redwood, which she carbonizes using the traditional Japanese shou-sugi-ban technique, or applies layers of silver nitrate, an element that freezes time.

Her art is grounded in the Japanese philosophical concept of Mono no aware, which can be loosely translated as an appreciation of transitory or ephemeral things. It evokes a duality between permanence and impermanence, the natural and the artificial, inviting reflection on the passage of time and the fragility of life.

The works will be available for sale at SAINT LAURENT RIVE DROITE Los Angeles.
