This diptych by Tomokazu Matsuyama beautifully elucidates the artist’s interest in commingling seemingly disparate elements in order to create an image that is completely new and yet also uncannily recognizable to anyone. The natural world has been brought indoors in the form of birds, butterflies and snowflakes; outside, the night sky is wallpapered; priceless looking ceramics share table space with an iPhone and bits of trash; the three figures, borrowed from the pages of fashion magazines, lounge around the impossible chic space looking bored and disinterested—one leans on an Andy Warhol Brillo Box sculpture. Matsuyama blends visual elements taken from Eastern and Western culture, and borrowed from different times, in order to arrive at something that will be familiar to all people, even if it is not necessarily representative of anything they have actually encountered before.
