Kory is part of Devan Shimoyama’s Barbershop series, which revolves around a fictitious barbershop where Black individuals can fully express themselves in their masculinity and femininity in a safe and welcoming way. The portraits in this series depict people who, on the one hand, are fully individuated as characters, and on the other hand suggest archetypal aspects of contemporary Black culture. Kory represents a shift Shimoyama has seen in the culture. He started this series in 2018. In the ensuing years, he has seen society move forward in terms of how gender binaries are perceived. “I wanted Kory to feel androgynous,” Shimoyama says. “I don’t think of them as male or female.”
