This work is part of the Single Breath Transfer series, a body of blown glass sculptures Michael Joo made from casts of paper and plastic bags. Joo found the bags on the streets of New York. He inflated each bag with a single breath and made a cast of the resulting form, which was then made into the glass sculpture. The series examines the nature of breath by rendering its transmission into disposable bags as elegant glass forms, while also examining relationships between humans, materials and their environments. Networks of meaning intersect in the fragility and ephemeral luminosity of these delicate works.
