“Turning and turning in the widening gyre, the falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the center cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world…” – William Butler Yeats
Leviathan is titled after the Thomas Hobbes book; Leviathan or The Matter, Forme and Power of a Common Wealth Ecclesiasticall and Civil, which engages theories surrounding the origins of societal structures and their authority over the nature of man. The text presents a poignant discussion in contemporary times where civic conflict is ever more prevalent and yet remarkably momentary in the mind.
This presentation by Kaino introduces a series of new work that explores the precarious balance that holds structures and ideas in place through a visual language built on poetics. Despite a quiet and calm presence, the works Socratic or dialectic capabilities counter the idea of archiving or being safe with notions of radical balance, and encourage or exemplify a living with balance in the real. If Kaino encourages us to do anything at all it is to fix ideas when they break, adjust ideas to make them work: caring for ideas, and making them vital. The works in Leviathan remain staunchly empathetic to both the value and potential of ideas.
