This portrait by internationally acclaimed painter, muralist and brand ambassador Hebru Brentley captures a pensive and determined-looking Flyboy, Brentley’s best known character. Flyboy is frequently depicted wearing a red bandana around his neck, which, in a different context, could be construed as a signal that this person is a member of the Bloods street gang. In this image, Flyboy’s left eye is scratched out, implying partially obscured vision. The title, Blood is a Crip, plays with the various possible meanings of these words, evoking multiple interpretations and suggesting a union of opposites. That theme that is echoed by other iconolatry in the painting, such as the hexagram in the upper left corner (a symbol used by alchemists and spiritualists to suggest a communion of complementary forces), and the phrase “BAD LIKE GOOD” in the upper right.
