This untitled painting by Manish Nai is part of a series of works the artist created during a summer artist residency with Kavi Gupta in Chicago. To create the work, Nai introduced bursts of acrylic paint to double sheets of fly screen attached to a wooden frame. The simplicity of the gesture and the modesty of the materials belie the complexities hiding within Nai’s theories and his art historical references. The application of the paint recalls Abstract Expressionist artists such as Helen Frankenthaler and Jackson Pollock. The use of quotidian materials and the relaxed method of letting mediums speak for themselves references mid-century movements such as Arte Povera and Gutai Group. Conceptually, Nai is also using this painting which can be viewed from two different sides, and which relies on elements outside of the artist’s control, to question hierarchical notions of what is considered art.
