India: Two Views, Danica Phelps & Debi Ray-Chaudhuri: Kavi Gupta | 835 W. Washington Blvd. Chicago, IL, 60607

9 December 2005 - 28 January 2006
Overview

Danica Phelps creates charts and drawings which document her life through the use of different systems and parameters such as her daily spending, which ultimately reveal her personal activities, relationships and habits. This body of work is based on a specific period of time where she and Debi Ray-Chaudhuri traveled to India together. Debi Ray-Chaudhuri documented the trip through photographs which were used as a basis for her paintings in the exhibition. While Debi was in India she visited family members and parts of India she had never seen before. These two vantage points together reflect the way two people in an intimate relationship remain whole and individual in the midst of being dislocated and in a place that is foreign.

Danica Phelps lives and works in NY. Selected solo exhibitions include Zach Feuer Gallery (LFL) NY, and Ritter/Zamet, London, Sister Gallery, LA; Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam. Group shows include Aldrich Museum of Art, CT; Brooklyn Museum of Art, NY; New Museum of Contemporary Art, NY; and Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada
