This work by AFRICOBRA co-founder Wadsworth Jarrell belongs to a series of sculptural paintings that relate to the themes of family, music, work, and other topics of deep personal resonance for the artist. Embedded into the work are images and objects relating to his childhood memories of his father. His father's favorite saw and several of the paint brushes he would use in his furniture restoration are actually included in the work. Central to the piece is an image of Jarrell's father working on a bench. The work contains several of Jarrell's signature visual motifs, such as wavy lines, coils and African patterns and symbols. The unusual shape of the piece relates to the history of woodworking and furniture making in Jarrell's family.
