Kavi Gupta congratulates Firelei Báez on her participation in the 10th Berlin Biennale. Báez has created a site specific ruined architectural façade that combines the coordinates of the Sanssouci palace in Potsdam and the Sans-Souci castle, located in Milot, Haiti as well as a murdered Haitian colonel named Jean-Baptiste Sans-Souci. With this, Báez is referencing how historical events take place in numerous places, not just singular locations. Taking place from June 9 to September 9, 2018 at various locations in Berlin We Don’t Need Another Hero is curated by Gabi Ngcobo with an accompanying curatorial team featuring Nomaduma Rosa Masilela, Serubiri Moses, Thiago de Paula Souza, and Yvette Mutumba.
Also featured in We Don’t Need Another Hero is Báez’s piece Those who would douse it (it does not disturb me to accept that there are places where my identity is obscure to me, and the fact that it amazes you does not mean I relinquish it) made from deaccessioned book pages.
