Like the cords tied together at its base, the twin braids worn by the figure in this woven sculpture by Suchitra Mattai suggest that our futures are tied to the past, same as we are tied to different realities within ourselves. Like all of Mattai’s work, this image is rooted in her personal history—in memories of her experiences as a Guyanese immigrant to the United States, and experiences she has had with illness at various times in her life, which she says “are replete with the internalization of otherness.” Seen from the rear, the figure in this composition is framed by a haunted forest of forms constructed from vintage saris—lingering material echoes of generations of female ancestors who, as indentured workers, extended Mattai’s familial heritage from India, to Guyana, to the US. The figure embodies a sense of non-consensus reality—walking towards an uncertain future with multiple minds, and multiple competing perspectives, as exclusion and isolation coexist with a sense of being supported.
