This “stack” sculpture by Jessica Stockholder utilizes a furniture base as a support for a pedestal that in turn supports a sculptural assemblage. The series of stacked works which this piece is part of is related to Stockholder’s investigation of “Assists,” which are sculptures that could not stand without the assistance of some other physical element. Like all of Stockholder’s works, this sculpture incorporates consumer objects that are ubiquitous in the waste stream of Western culture, such as second hand furniture, used rope, and hair dryer parts. The work is designed to instigate movement from the viewer. As the viewer walks around the piece, different elements of the work create moments of discovery and surprise. The work is based on hard-edge painting, as solid fields of color interact within the composition. Social and political, and even personal moments of illumination often occur nonetheless as viewers interact with the work, especially as they engage with questions about what these materials are, where they come from, and what their use is to society.
