The portraits in this series depict people who, on the one hand, are fully individuated as characters, and on the other hand suggest archetypal aspects of contemporary Black culture. “Bryant is more explicitly masculine,” Shimoyama says. “A bearded Black man with a sharp hairline. He has masculine features, but he still cares for himself by getting his hair and eyebrows done.”1of 2
