This painting relates to Sherman Beck's series of Mask painting, also known as his Ancestor series. The composition features a yellow box in which floats four sets of human eyes. The background consists of a field of abstract geometric forms. Within the abstract forms, certain biomorphic shapes and color and tone variations suggest the presence of other sets of eyes, or even faces. The Mask series examines correlations between outward appearances and inner truth.—what we think we perceive is not always what is truly there. Many of the paintings in this series juxtapose full human faces with traditional African masks. This work narrows the focus to what can be communicated through the eyes alone.
