Assembled from fragments of history—evoked by strips of fabric taken from vintage saris—and fragments of the here and now—expressed by materials like feather boas and a peacock feather—the composition shows a massive flower sprouting from the foundation watched over by two female figures wearing golden halos. Mattai’s work is informed by the competing influences heritage and ancestry have on future generations. Her family’s history of migration from India to Guyana during the time of colonial indentured servitude is a massive influence on her life and work. Her personal feelings of otherness after immigrating to the United States empower her with a belief that she is the one pushing the story of her family forward from a bedrock of history, memory, and myth.Exhibitions
