Monyae, however, is kind of the antithesis to the dedicated, concerned, present personality Conteh perceived in Bill. Monyae claimed to have many children with many different women, and talked openly about not regularly being present in their lives. Conteh couldn’t ascertain whether Monyae was being truthful, or boastful, or whether he was showing himself to be someone he’s really not. But based on what he was saying, and how easily and freely he was sharing what seemed like questionable life decisions, Conteh could see that this individual was troubled. “What he was showing me, I saw the damage,” Conteh says. “I don’t want to get into the nuts and bolts because it's unfair to go at him. From what he told me though, well, the image I made of him, there’s a lot of cracks in him. Usually the image is in the field of destruction, but here, the image itself is eroded. The focus is him, himself. I guess from him not thinking I would judge, that shows me there are folks out here who are walking around eroded, partially destroyed, and they don’t even know it.”
