Jarrell created this revolutionary sculptural piece at a pivotal time in the evolution of her personal style. As an AFRICOBRA founder, she had made her reputation in the medium of garment making. Yet she had other aesthetic interests, including painting, sculpture, and furniture design. 1994 marked the moment when she found the visual language to express her desire to confidently move into realm of the threedimensional. The two most iconic works that express this moment are Going to NYC, and Frock You. As seen here, Frock You poetically blends each of her interests— garment making, sculpture, woodworking, and painting. The visual langauge of the painting harkens back to thesymbology of the AFRICOBRA time, while the colors move towards a more contemporary visual language. Notably, the figure modeling the dress is absent from the work. This is a message from Jarrell to those who would try to force her to stick with her past methods. She's already gone. The playful title is her message to anyone who would try to hold her back.
