Jarrell created this painting at a pivotal time in the revolution of her personal style. As an AFRICOBRA founder, she had made her reputation in the medium of garment making. Yet she had other aesthetic interests, including painting, sculpture, and furniture design. 1994 marked the moment when she found the visual language to express her desire to confidently move into realm of the three-dimensional. The two most iconic works that express this moment are Going to NYC, and Frock You. Going to NYC shows figures in an interior space similar to the clothing boutiques Jarrell has owned and operated over the course of her life. On the rack hang many of her most iconic designs from the AFRICOBRA times, including the Jazz Scramble Jacket and the Urban Wall Vest. These items hang as though being sent out into the world, to make room for something new. The work itself bridges the physical qualities of painting and sculpture. it memorializes the past, while paving the way to Jarrell's future.
