The two circular forms on this painting by Michi Meko represent star charts, but they are Meko’s own versions of star charts. They take on the circular traits and the structure of something recognizable as a map, but they are also abstractions full of intuitive marks and secret meanings, making them contradictions of maps. This piece speaks to Michi’s interest in the “fugitive view.” When on the run, or in hiding or seeking freedom, you can always look to the hemispheres, the Northern or the Southern, to navigate. You can also always navigate fugitive spaces through the creation of your own mental star chart, a map of your own internal wilderness.
