This piece comes out of Shimoyama’s reflections on loss of community from gentrification or other phenomena that push communities away from certain neighborhoods. Using a visual cue of shoes dangling from a wire, this piece reads almost like a chandelier, inviting consideration of the different ways a gesture can evoke a multitude of meanings. People see a sight like this and associate it with gang activity, but even gangs are being pushed out of neighborhoods in which they once operated. Before The Storm speaks to the character and history of such places, and the ways that character and personality changes because of certain structures or developments.Exhibitions
