The word reflection comes to mind when looking at this mirrored steel sculpture by New York-based artist Tomokazu Matsuyama. Titled He Sits, She Reads, the piece addresses reflective natures in a multitude of ways, from the reflective surface, to the mirrored images of the two faces, to the notion of both sitting and reading as activities of reflectivity. Matsuyama’s metal sculptures translate the visual language present in his paintings, bringing a multitudinous and complex range of visual references together in a symbolic and multi-layered aesthetic space. This work draws from visual and cultural iconographies to which anyone from any culture could theoretically relate, bringing patterns and fashion styles from both East and West together, expressing what Matsuyama refers to as the “global us,” a multitudinous reality reflective of today's nomadic diaspora. Matsuyama’s sculptural practice is informed by his process of questioning how his imagery might be experienced by viewers in three-dimensional space. He contemplates the total optical experience of his paintings and the logical relationships of the formal elements within them, creating mirrored forms and patterns that serve as an optical metaphor for his vision of cultural exchange and influence. The effect event extends beyond the piece, as its surfaces will take on the colors of its environment. Matsuyama hopes we will all recognize ourselves in his uncanny visual language, if not from our memories then from our aspirations or dreams.
