Order My Steps is part of a new body of figurative quilts by St. Louis based artist Basil Kincaid. There are several different references in Order My Steps. When Kincaid was growing up, his mother would sing hymns while his father, a preacher, would get ready to preach. Order My Steps was one of the songs she would most commonly sing. “The song is about trusting the calling of your life, or your path in life,” says Kincaid. “It wasn’t always easy for me to choose art. I knew art was choosing me, but it wasn’t easy to choose back. There were times when it would have been easy to get on a different path. But this piece is about trusting your intuition. Something inside of me was saying keep going this way even though it may not make sense right now.” Around the hands and the feet of the figures in the image there are circular forms, reminiscent of paths the figures are walking on, and the energy of the actions the hands are making. There is also a reference in those paths to the game Dance, Dance Revolution.“That’s a game, it has parameters, but if you get good you develop a subconscious skill,” says Kincaid. “That happens in life, when your habits are in place you start treating yourself a different way, and things start to fall into place. This piece is about getting your steps in order with your community and your value system.”
