Roxy Paine is interested in the juxtaposition of humanity’s desire for control, and nature’s innate resistance to being controlled. That dichotomy is present in this work, which was created by Paine’s “Scumak” machine—an automatic sculpture maker of the artist’s creation. The machine extrudes melted, pigmented polyethylene onto a conveyor belt. The melted blobs harden into unique cultural objects made by a machine, formed by natural forces, and instigated by the careful planning of the human mind.
