Willie Cole is a pioneering contemporary American sculptor, painter, and conceptual artist. Inspired by various traditions, such as assemblage, Neo-Realism, African sculpture, Dada, and Surrealism, he creates idiosyncratic objects that hover between readymade and Pop icon.
The form of this elegant, cast bronze sculpture recollects Cole’s long-standing interest in African art history. At first, it may only resemble a stacked assemblage of discarded high-heeled shoes. In fact, it is one of the most mature examples of Cole’s long-running Mother and Child series.
Like the British sculptor Henry Moore, Cole has returned often to the subject of mother and child in his paintings and sculptures. He has explored the theme through a wide range of materials and compositions, making extensive use of readymade objects and found materials, especially salvaged shoes, irons, and other consumer objects.
