Jeffrey Gibson's Quilt series (2019) emerged from the performative garments Gibson exhibited at the 2018 Armory Show in New York and the 2019 Whitney Biennial. Gibson stitched together fabric scraps by hand to form the foundation of the quilts, embedding references to songs, poetry, philosophy and events such as the Standing Rock Protests. Gibson then collaborated with Robert Bemis, a quilt artist based in Troy, New York, inviting him to free form "draw" on the quilts with stitching.
