One of Roger Brown's "multiframe" paintings that internally operate like a comic book, the composition likely is meant to refer to a series of paintings by Tiepolo titled "The Triumph of Pulcinella." Pulcinella was the original basis of folk theater clown Mr. Punch, used naturally by Tiepolo as a means of satire. Brown transposes the figure to contemporary America, retelling the humiliation, vindication, and ultimate triumph of the laughable figure. Held in the collections of the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen, the museum's text proposes that the piece pokes fun at the "triumphal" tradition in painting. Brown's own personal interest in satire, as well as his interest in European art historical painting, makes this very much a work of passion, Brown observing how the genre was being handled by an old master.
