Works such as Bear (2012) have come to epitomize Tony Tasset's particular mastery of Super Realism, an aesthetic position that prizes readily accessible images. "The goal is simple," Tasset says. "Make it look real." Bear also relates to Tasset's appreciation for the types of fiberglass forms that typically are found alongside roadside attractions, which speak to a sort of bygone Americana full of optimism and spectacle. Like other fiberglass sculptures Tasset has done—such as his downtrodden Paul Bunyan sculpture, his melting snowman series, or his smashed pumpkins—Bear flips that sense of phony optimism, evoking instead a sense of anxiety and weirdness more honestly connected to the mundanity of everyday life.
Able to be installed either indoors or outdoors, editions of Tasset's Bear have been featured in noteworthy exhibitions of both, including the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's 150th Anniversary Show Civilization and Its Discontents (2015) and the Public Sector of Art Basel Miami Beach (2013).
