Titled Stack 6901.17, this sculpture is part of a series of architectural cement pillars by Theater Gates that contain remnants of reclaimed domestic objects and materials, in this case, shards of glass and carpet. The work is emblematic of the artist’s interest in objects, materials, and ideas from history that are lying in wait to be scavenged and transformed. Part minimalist aesthetic expression, part social commentary and part architectural scavenge, the process of creating these works demonstrates the artist’s ability to transform abandoned or forgotten bits of the past into viable contemporary cultural products.
