This sculpture by Tony Tasset captures with absolute honestly the beautiful melancholy of Midwestern winter. Part of Tasset's beloved Snowman series, it has a noble ugliness to it, lumpy and flecked with twigs and grass, slightly misshapen as if by the hands of a child. That wabi-sabi kind of "beautiful imperfection" is essential to the series. Tasset is not producing the icon of a snowman, but a sincere recreation of an everyday snowman as it might exist in the real world. Each of Tasset’s snowmen is unique, lovingly rendered with exacting detail, with each piece of debris, each facial feature, and each accessory placed carefully by Tasset such that they all have their own specific character.
