Richard Prince is a painter, photographer, sculptor, writer, and performer whose work expands across multiple aesthetic and cultural realms. In 2001, Prince created a mini-museum for himself in upstate New York, which he called Second House. Two years later, Prince was curated by Francesco Bonami and Daniel Birnbaum into the group exhibition Delays and Revolutions, which was part of the 2003 Venice Biennale. Along with that exhibition, the art publishing company Edition Schellmann worked with Prince to create a limited edition of 100 (plus 10 artist proofs) brass and plastic sculptures called Untitled (Key to the Second House), resembling a key decorated with the Playboy Bunny. In 2005, the publisher Verlag Der Buchhandlung Walther-Werke König published a hardcover book documenting Second House. The Guggenheim Museum subsequently purchased Second House from Prince, promising to keep it open to the public for 10 years. In 2007, shortly after the Guggenheim purchased it, Second House was struck by lightning and burned to the ground.
