Process is essential to Angel Otero's "Paint Skin" paintings. He starts by making a painting on a glass surface in a traditional way. Afterwards, he scrapes the paint off of the glass surface, creating what he calls a "paint skin." These paint skins are then collaged onto a canvas to create layered, dimensional, abstracted images. Each time a paint skin is scraped off the glass, it leaves behind remnants of colors and images, which are then transferred to the next layer of paint, similar to the process of printing. Each layer therefore carries with it some remnant of the past. In these collaged paintings, Otero strives to communicate feelings about the light, the air, and the sensations he remembers from his home in Puerto Rico.
