Dr. Margaret Walker was a teacher at Jackson College, which later became Jackson State University. This JSU holds a special significance for me as I spent a lot of time there in my youth and graduated from there before attending Yale. Dr. Walker taught many of my teachers, mentored Alice Walker, and was friends with my early mentor, Roland Freeman. Their influence has greatly shaped my understanding of the South, which is reflected in the motif of the quilt in my artwork.
