This drawing is a preparatory study for a body of paintings Nikko Washington created for his debut solo exhibition with Kavi Gupta gallery in 2023, titled For The Old Gods and The New. The exhibition examined the connections between the legends told about contemporary sports stars and legends adapted from African folklore and mythology transported throughout the African diaspora during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Within this image we see a black crow, dancers, and an image of Jesse Owens, among other things—all references to specific elements of the visual language Washington created for the exhibition.
