In this painting, Nikko Washington depicts The Old Maker, a traditional, African folkloric depiction of the creator of the universe, as a dancer in a gold dress taking a bow. The pose references a performance of Revelations, a famous production by the all-black Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Rather than depicting the Creator of the universe as a man, Washington depicts her as a multi-faced, feminine deity. The moment captured in this painting takes place right before the universe is created, in the black space or void, the space of creation. Rather than taking a bow at the end of a performance, The Old Maker is bowing at the start, announcing that her act of creative brilliance is about to begin.
