Layered atop a page from an Indian magazine, the painted image of this super heroine is based on the image of a famous Bollywood star. “The first prize ribbon is a tongue and cheek reference to the idealized woman in various cultures,” Mattai says. “What does it take to be this super heroine? What does it take to win first prize?” A network of threads is embroidered into the work, creating an architectural form, as if the heroine herself has the super power to construct her own reality. This piece belongs to a series Mattai debuted in 2023, memorializing super heroines as embodiments of feminine empowerment.
