The woman in this portrait by Alfred Conteh seems confident, wearing cornrows, projecting a friendly feeling. She explained to Conteh that she was a transplant—she moved to Atlanta from New York 20 years ago. Like a lot of people from around the country, she came to Atlanta to go to school and to work. When she arrived, things were better than they are now in terms of opportunity, but Atlanta is her home now. “I consider Reneé emblematic of a lot of the Black population of Atlanta,” Conteh says. “She came at a time when it was beneficial, and now she’s experiencing what’s happening with the lay of the land, politically and economically. She ain’t going nowhere else, but she’s also a victim of what’s happening here.”
