This sculpture by Esmaa Mohamoud features an elongated rattan Peacock Chair, painted black. An iconic piece of furniture that many people might remember from their own childhood home (especially if they grew up in the 60s or 70s), the Peacock Chair has its roots in the worst aspects of colonialism and empire. The earliest popularized versions of this chair were woven by inmates in colonial prisons (particularly in the Philippines) and then sold to visiting dignitaries, with the funds used to continue financing the prisons. The chair was reclaimed as a symbol of Black Pride in the 1960s when Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton was photographed sitting in one. In this sculpture, Mohamoud extends the legacy of the reclamation of the Peacock Chair to suggest not only equal representation (getting a seat at the table) but to express the achievement of something far greater―a seat above the table, suggestive of true power and influence. That idea is invoked further by the subtitle of the sculpture (Regina King), a reference to the internationally renowned Black actress, who was named by Time Magazine in 2019 one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
