This colorful assembly of winding spheres is woven together from vintage saris—a material recognition of the past generations of women who have contributed to Suchitra Mattai’s ancestral heritage. Mattai’s playful use of humor is evident in the title of this work. In philosophy, circular thinking is a logical error in which both the conclusion is just as lacking in evidence as the premise, and yet both are used to justify each other. Mattai’s use of the phrase nods to the validating effect that history has on the present, and that the present in turn has on the past, especially in terms of familial heritage and legacy.
