In this surprising composition, Beck depicts six goldfish swimming within a sea of geometric forms and patterns. The fish fade ethereally in some places and come sharper into focus in others. For Beck, this painting is partially about family, as it depicts his actual pet goldfish. It is also about the aesthetic challenge the subject matter presented to Beck. “I had a pet goldfish and I took a picture of the little goldfish,” Beck says. “I wanted to make a painting that would challenge me in trying to capture the iridescence of that fish.”
