Self-discovery is a key aspect of Sherman Beck’s practice, recurring in his explorations of masks and identity, as well as in his examinations of ancestry and humanity’s relationship with nature. In this composition, we see various materializations of a figure reaching through space time toward an image of themselves that is looking back at them through a glowing window frame. On both sides of the window, the figures strive to comprehend the mysterious interconnections they share between them. Throughout the image we also see familiar aesthetic motifs that define Beck’s visual language, such as the architectonic substrate of geometric patterns and forms.
