Verdant, organic swirls of green radiate throughout the light blue color world of Volta Obisi Vera, a painting by Ghanian artist Elizabeth Sekyiamah. This swirling, abstract composition conveys the movements and rituals associated with domestic work. Sekyiamah makes paintings that communicate the daily realities of her life as a woman in Ghana. The individual markings relate to specific movements that are part of her day. The patterns themselves, as well as the very concept of patterns, are essential to the meaning of the work. “My work is about domestic lives,” says Sekyiamah. “It’s inspired by daily actions, me waking up, working, everything we do. It’s continuous. Visually it repeats itself.”
